Medusa: A Celebration of Strength
Medusa: A
Celebration of Strength needs
women artist of pretty much all genres to submit work
for the three day experience. The three days that
comprise Medusa will raise money for five community
organizations: Civic Media Center, Planned Parenthood,
Acorn Clinic, The Gainesville Iguana and Satellite
Magazine. And if all goes well, performers will be paid
small stipends. (And I mean small.)
Since there are three different events, I'll list the
submission criteria under the specific dates.
Thursday, June 5th: Music Show at Common
Grounds, 919 W. University Ave. Start
time 10:00 p.m. or so.
Needed three to five bands/musicians. In bands, women
must be in the majority or a woman must be the
understood leader/originator. Depending on money raised
from sponsors, a stipend will be paid to
bands/musicians. Please contact me a.s.a.p. I also
will be approaching musicians and bands. Common Grounds
is a venue that allows smoking.
Friday, June 6th: Gallery Show
at 920 Building, 920 NW 2nd Ave. Start time 8:00 p.m.
Smoke free venue
Looking for pieces exploring women's
strengths. Especially interested in pieces that take
historically negative characters like Medusa or the
Furies and re-shape them into positive images of women's
power. Also looking for pieces exploring women's anger
or other intense emotions that might be undervalued
sources of strength. Also acceptable are pieces about
ways women can empower themselves: politically,
sexually, economically and socially. No more than two
pieces per person may be submitted. Video work will
work best at the gallery show. Artists will be
responsible for dropping art work off and picking art
work up. Artists may sell their pieces at the show but
are responsible for handling sales. Tech needs that the
artist cannot fulfill must be asked for in advance and
there are no guarantees that it will be doable.
Submissions of snapshots,
slides or a conversation with me due by May 23rd. The
sooner the better. Also a detailed oriented gallery
maven is needed to help organize the show. A
stipend will be paid to the gallery maven.
Monday, June 9th: Cabaret at Hippodrome
Mainstage, 25 SE 2nd Place. Start
time 8:00 p.m. sharp
Smoke free venue
Looking for performance pieces that explore women's
strengths. Especially interested in pieces that take
historically negative characters like Medusa or the
Furies and re-shape them into positive images of women's
power. (The only character off limits is Kate from
Taming of the Shrew which I'll working with.) Also
looking for pieces exploring women's anger or other
intense emotions that might be undervalued sources of
strength. Also acceptable are pieces about ways women
can empower themselves: politically, sexually,
economically and socially.
Poetry, Spoken Word, Storytelling, Monologues,
Performance Art, Dance and Acoustic Music are
acceptable. Poetry and Spoken Word pieces can be no
more than 10 minutes unless you get a diva dispensation.
Storytelling, Monologues, Performance Art, Dance and
Acoustic Music pieces can't be longer than 15 minutes
without an special diva dispensation. Acoustic
Musicians must be able to perform without amps probably
without mics, the acoustics are great. Pieces that are
memorized and polished performances will be given
preference. Poets and spoken word artists are requested
to be able to read their work without having to have
their eyes glued to the page. There may or may not be a
mic, so you must be able to project. Video work will
not be accepted for this show due to tech limitations.
Depending on money raised from sponsors, small stipends
will be paid to performers. Also needed are three
people to work the door and act as ushers, stipends will
be paid. To submit your piece please call or email me
by May 16th.
If you have any questions, please email or call me. If
you are interested in helping with the gallery show or
ushering at the Hipp show, please contact me a.s.a.p.
Enjoy,
Sheila Bishop
