Bio & Statement
Clay is the mythological building block from which
all life was created. All acts of creation with it
reference the initial transformation of energy into
life. It is a material that goes through extreme
transformations in water and fire. The only limitation
it seems to have is the imagination of its user. These
powerful and limitless qualities of clay have always
called to me. Clay inspires me to make work that tells
stories about creation, our culture, and the quality of
life we choose for ourselves.

Jill Stansbury
Jill
Stansbury is a Tampa Bay ceramic artist. She began her
ceramic studies at New College of the University of
South Florida under the tutelage of Jack Cartlidge.
Subsequently, she has studied under Randy Johnston, Pete
Pinnel, and Linda Christianson. Her work has been
exhibited at The Art Center of St. Petersburg, Florida
Craftsman Gallery, Hot Alley Studios, and Brigit Books.
She has taught art at the Center for Education
Montessori School and the Art Center of St. Petersburg.
Additionally, she participated in the Arts Council of
Hillsborough County's Visiting Artists in the Schools
program. Currently, she teaches private art lessons in
Tampa. It is her belief that education is one of the
most important pursuits anyone can engage in as either a
student or a teacher.
Her work is an exploration of the relationships between
people and the pots they use. It evokes the texture of
human skin and the shapes of the human form. When
viewing her work, one cannot help but think of Genesis
and the creation stories of cultures around the globe
that describe the role of clay in the beginnings of
life.
She believes, that in these fast paced times, it is a
radical act to make and use beautiful functional ceramic
ware. It requires that people prepare food, pay
attention to its presentation, and sit down at a table
to eat. This is an alternative to ordering food through
car windows and eating it out of waxed paper products.
To her, something as simple as where the food we eat
comes from and how we eat it affects our health and the
health of the planet.
