Bio & Statement
B.K. Lyons was born in Falmouth, MA July 3, 1973 and is a 3rd generation South Tampa resident and 6th generation Floridian. She comes from a long line of artists. She studied art at Florida State University and photography at Florida A&M University. Through her studies, she has restored photographs for the Black Archives in Tallahassee, Florida. She has done mural work for over 10 years and shown her work in local South Tampa Galleries. Once a year she tries to donate at least one piece of her art to a cause close to her, mainly to help local children.
As the latest in a long line of female, Florida artists, B. K. Lyons has taken her work further than all of her predecessors. She comes by her talent naturally, although she has studied at Florida State. Describing herself as a manic artist, her style varies as often as her media and subject matter, ranging from acrylic mermaids and fish to hand drawn prismacolor mosaics to 3-D acrylic paintings.
In the past two years, B.K. Lyons has consistently created a wide variety of styles, never fearing her media and often mixing both genres and materials to take her work even further out of the box. By ignoring the rules and the word can't and allowing her materials to work with her, she has developed in to a multi media artist, although she still often refers to herself as the best colorer out there, which she was called by a three year old admirer of her work. The subject matter of most of her work has a whimsical feel of the thing she once dreaded but has come to embrace, Florida art. In college, she concentrated on photography, later discovering sculpture, but she has found her true passion in Acrylics, prismacolor and pastel, rarely touching a camera, except to photograph her own work.
Her current projects include hand drawn mosaics and large scale mosaics featuring the different heritages throughout the Tampa area.
